KickPort 2 Review From Drum Magazine. Kickport 2 Improves On The Original

It’s safe to say that the drumming universe was turned on its collective head when the Kickport bass drum sound enhancer was introduced a few years ago. Since then drummers around the world (including your loyal author) have enjoyed the extra low-end punch this nifty little device delivers to your kick.

And yet, the inescapable question remained – where to go from here? Well, onto the Kickport 2, of course; although the accessory’s latest incarnation isn’t just a cosmetic facelift. The second-generation version features a newly developed Firm-Flex collar for easier installation, a better fit, and an even fatter bass drum sound. This is welcome news, since I personally found installation to be a bit tricky with the original design. But even better – despite all the improvements, the company hasn’t raised the price by a single penny.

So if you’re one of those drummers who waited to see if the Kickport would ripen like a fine wine over time, I’ve got news for you – it has.

Take a loolk at the specially-designed T-Ring Bass drumhead Reinforcement Rings and D-Pad Impact Pads from KickPort

KickPort’s new D-Pad

Bass drum impact pad features a unique, figure-eight design that allows it to be used for double pedals or separated into two individual pads for single and double bass drum situations. Besides strengthening and protecting the playing area of the drumhead, the D-Pad also helps focus the attack component of the drum’s sound.

Chad Szeliga of Breaking Benjamin says: ” The D-Pad sounds great and I really like them with the KickPort.  It adds a nice amount of attack as well as adding protection for my batter head.  Another very cool product from the guys at KickPort!”

from KickPort have been developed to improve the sound and performance of virtually all bass drums. Made from durable PVC film with premium-grade, 3M® adhesive, the bass drum accessories are recommended for use with the company’s popular KickPort sound insert and also highly effective when used separately.

Daniel Bejarano Loves His KickPort

“The KickPort makes your bass drum a drum again by allowing it to breathe and resonate just as it was intended. Your kick drum will no longer be used as a linen closet where you keep pillows, blankets & towels. The KickPort kicks.”

Daniel’s discography includes recordings with JVC recording artist Roger Smith, The Stanley Clarke/George Duke Project, Latin recording artists Marisela, Homero and Manoella Torres, as well as Motown/Tabu recording artist Identity Crisis. He has also recorded station breaks for NBC and ESPN, along with jingles for Target, K-Mart, Mervyn’s, and L.A.’s Spanish radio station KLVE.

KickPort Inventor Sam Millender

A lot of people ask me where did the idea for the KickPort come from? Want to give a big shout out to Sam Millender, the inventor. Sam is a drummer and a sound engineer. He wanted more low end from his kick and did not like the idea of carrying around a sub-woofer.

Artist Profile: Jayson Brinkworth

Jayson Brinkworth is an accomplished drummer/percussionist/vocalist who grew up and still makes his home on the Canadian Prairies in Regina, Saskatchewan. He has enjoyed many exciting moments in his 23 year career of playing, writing, teaching and recording music.

Jayson Brinkworth

Currently Jayson is working with top selling country artist Aaron Pritchett. As well, he finds time to freelance, record, educate and write about drumming and music. He is also co-owner of Music In The House, a music school in its 8th year with 375 students and 18 teachers on board.  In addition, Jayson contributes to Hudson Music‘s educational music magazine.

When we asked Jayson what it’s like to play a KickPort, he replied:

“There is a bass drum BK ( before Kickport ) and AK ( after Kickport ). This thing rocks my world and all of the engineers and sound techs I work with. My kick drums will never be the same, thanks Kickport !!!!

Dave Gakle - Suspect Studios, San Jose, CA

“The KickPort is easy to install, and improves the punch of any sized kick. I’ve also been able to remove the pillows from my drums, which improves the tone of mics placed inside the kick as well. I’m impressed enough to install KickPorts in all the studio kicks.”
